Are you tired of the way your breasts are sagging? If you feel anxious and uncomfortable about the problem, you can correct it with a breast lift. Age, significant weight loss, and pregnancy can all make the breasts sag and look droopy, but a breast lift is a fantastic way to get them looking full and perky again. If you’re wondering if you are a candidate for a breast lift, we offer some useful guidelines below.
What is a breast lift?
A breast lift is a procedure that elevates and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin, and repositioning the nipple. Breast lift surgery focuses on adjusting the position of the breasts so that they are firm, rounded, and appear more youthful.
A breast lift can be performed alone, but is sometimes combined with breast augmentation to achieve optimal breast enhancement. Breast augmentation is typically recommended for patients that also want to increase the size of their breasts.
Are you a Candidate for a Breast Lift?
Breast lift surgery addresses breasts that are sagging and have lost volume. It’s the ideal procedure for women that are happy with the size of their breasts, but would like to lift them so that they look perky and more youthful.
If you have any of the following symptoms, you may qualify as a candidate for breast lift surgery.
- Sagging, droopy breasts.
- Nipples that point downward.
- Asymmetrical breasts. This means that the breasts are uneven, so one breast may be in a higher position than the other.
- Breasts are flat or deflated at the top.
- Enlarged areola. The areola is the darker, circular area that surrounds the nipple. It often increases in size during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
When to consider a breast lift
A breast lift would be the answer for you if you have sagging breasts in the aftermath of childbirth. Hormone fluctuations during pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause the breasts to swell and shrink in cycles, resulting in a change in breast size and firmness. The breasts often become weighed down due to all these changes and are not able to snap back into shape, so they are never quite the same. A breast lift can restore the pre-pregnancy appearance of the breasts.
If you have undergone dramatic weight loss that has left you with a lot of excess, sagging skin, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift. Weight loss can cause the breasts to sag and hang down very low. A breast lift will elevate them to a more natural position on the chest wall.
The skin often loses elasticity with age, causing the breasts to become pendulous and less firm. A breast lift can address the descent of the breasts brought on by the passage of time, and give them a more youthful appearance.
Candidates for breast lift surgery should also be in good overall health, and have realistic expectations about what can be achieved with surgery.
If you are considering a breast lift, your prospective plastic surgeon will discuss your aesthetic goals and perform an evaluation during your initial consultation, to determine whether a breast lift would be right for you.
What’s involved in breast lift surgery?
Breast lift surgery involves removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple-areolar complex. It is an outpatient procedure that is usually done under general anesthesia.
There are several approaches that can be used to perform breast lift surgery including the popular anchor lift, and the lollipop lift. The incisions for the anchor lift are made around the edge of the areola, down the front of the breast and then along the breast crease. It is the ideal option for patients that have significant sagging.
The incisions for the lollipop lift are made around the areola, and a vertical incision is made along the underside of the breast. The lollipop lift is recommended for patients with mild-to moderate sagging of the breasts.
