Can recurring UTI’s be dangerous to my overall health?

Bladder infections or urinary tract infections are usually not considered life threatening, and treatment is usually fairly simple. UTI’s are far more common among women, and there are times when they become chronic. This often has some women asking – Can recurring UTIs be dangerous to my overall health.

Can UTI’s be dangerous to your health?
The urinary system consists of the kidneys, tubes that extend from the kidney, which are called ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. An infection can occur along any part of the system.  The infection is normally caused by bacteria that enter the urinary tract by way of the urethra.

While most cases of UTI’s are uncomplicated, recurrent UTI’s always warrant closer analysis to determine the reason why the infection keeps returning. Chronic urinary tract infection does pose a risk to your overall health, as it can eventually affect other organs of the body, such as the kidneys.

Evaluation of recurring UTI’s
Some women diagnosed with recurring UTI’s are often experiencing those symptoms due to changes that have taken place in the vaginal microflora. When the vagina is in good health, the microflora is optimally balanced. However, if there are any shifts in the normal balance of good vs bad bacteria, this can lead to symptoms that resemble a urinary tract infection. These symptoms include burning, and a feeling of an urgency to urinate.

If a UTI returns within a few weeks or months of treatment, then a comprehensive evaluation must be done to identify the cause. At Fowler GYN International (FGI), Paradise Valley, AZ, we have the advanced diagnostic tools needed to determine the cause of your recurrent UTI.
