The term arthritis does not refer to a single medical condition; rather, it covers a range of conditions that can affect the musculoskeletal system, which includes the joints. Common symptoms of arthritis include stiffness, pain, inflammation, and heat. These are all signs of a problem within the joint cavity. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common types of arthritis.
Osteoarthritis – Symptoms and Treatment
Osteoarthritis is caused by the erosion of the joint cartilage. Cartilage is the material that is found at the end of the long bones, and acts as a cushion and protective covering. When cartilage is damaged, changes occur in the structures around the joints, leading to pain and inflammation.
Rest and anti-inflammatory medications are usually recommended for mild forms of osteoarthritis, but in more severe cases cortisone injections are used. When these measures are no longer effective, surgical intervention may be required.
Rheumatoid Arthritis – Symptoms and Treatment
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by pain and swelling in the joints, but also affects the tissue and organs. The disease can become so chronic that it affects joint function.
Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis may include physical therapy, as well as corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and immunosuppressants are also prescribed.
