How Does A Breast Lift Work?

Are you unhappy with your breasts, but not sure if you need a breast augmentation or a breast lift? If your breasts look droopy and the nipples have dropped below the level of the breast fold, chances are you need a breast lift, but you will have to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to find out for sure. But how exactly does a breast lift work.

What is a breast lift?
A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that is done to raise and firm the breasts. As time goes by, the breasts may become droopy due to the effects of pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or natural aging.

How does a breast lift work?
In order to elevate the breasts excess skin is removed, the surrounding breast tissue is tightened, and the nipple/areola complex is shifted upward.

Mastopexy is typically done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The incision for breast lift surgery is often made around the edge of the areola, which is the dark area that surrounds the nipple. But there are alternative incision techniques, including the lollipop incision and anchor. The lollipop incision is made around the areola and down the front of breast. The anchor incision is similar, but also extends along the breast crease (inframammary fold).

After the incisions are made the surgeon will lift and reshape the breast tissue and reposition the nipple/areola complex. The excess tissue is then removed and the incisions closed.
