How painful is laser hair removal

If you’ve decided to have laser hair removal done to get rid of unwanted hair, you’ll certainly save time and money in the long run.  However, chances are there is one question you would like answered about the procedure – how painful is laser hair removal.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal is a simple, outpatient procedure in which laser energy is used to inhibit hair growth.  The laser energy targets the melanin (pigment) at the base of the hair follicle, and the heat that’s generated damages the hair follicle.  This prevents future hair growth.  The treated hair usually falls out within 10-14 days.

How many laser hair removal treatments do you need?

It typically takes several treatments to achieve the best results, because the laser energy can only impact hair when it is in the active growth phase.

How painful is laser hair removal

Laser hair removal does hurt, but most patients agree that it’s much less painful than waxing.

The discomfort experienced during laser hair removal is often compared to having a rubber band repeatedly snapped against the skin.  However, it’s generally agreed that the level of pain with laser hair removal varies based on the patient’s pain tolerance, and the area of the body being treated.  For example, laser hair removal on the underarms and back, is generally more painful than treatment on the arms.

In addition, some hair removal lasers have a built-in cooling mechanism that enhances patient comfort, and protects the skin.
