For some women, increased sexual activity gives rise to urinary tract infections or UTIs. This often causes them to dread having sex, because they are afraid that in doing so, they might once again contract a UTI. Faced with this dilemma, they often seek medical help wanting to know – “How can I prevent recurring UTI after intercourse with my partner?” In order to adequately address this question, we first have to take a look at the causes of UTIs.
Urinary Tract Infection
Frequent urination, irritation with urgency to urinate, and burning along the urinary stream are the usual symptoms of a UTI. The bacteria that cause a UTI often originate from the bacterial flora the opening of the vagina. The bad bacteria may travel via the urethra into the bladder. The urethra is the tube that runs from the bladder and opens out near the front of the vagina. The majority of the bacteria originates in the vagina, and higher concentrations of pathogenic bacteria are present when an imbalance brought on by the overgrowth of bad bacteria occurs.
Preventing Recurring UTIs
While intercourse does not cause UTI, it can result in the introduction of the bacteria into the urethra by mechanical action. Since the bacteria that cause UTI’s can be traced to the vagina, then preventing recurring UTI’s can be achieved by restoring balance to the vaginal micro-flora.
Fowler GYN International (FGI) has been able to help many women suffering from recurrent UTI’s. FGI routinely performs the advanced Vaginal Fluid Analysis (VFA) test, to determine if the UTI is caused by the vagina having out-of-balance micro-flora. If the bad bacteria are indeed the source, a customized treatment protocol is designed to restore balance.
