Most women get a yeast infection at least once in their life, but there are others who come down with condition frequently. The reason for these chronic yeast infections is often not entirely clear, so women who have them often ask their doctor – Why do I have recurring yeast infections – could this be something more? Sometimes it is.
Recurring yeast infections are often cause symptoms such as burning, itching, and irritation. A closer and more detailed analysis often reveals that the problem is being caused by irregularities in the vaginal flora, and until that issue is addressed, the infections will continue to occur.
When yeast infections are a reflection that something else is wrong
The normal vaginal flora consists of a variety of micro-organisms that interact with each other. This includes mostly good bacteria known as lactobacilli, but there are also many bad strains of bacteria present in the vagina as well.
There are times when the delicate balance of the vagina is disturbed, resulting in changes that adversely affect the vaginal environment. This often leads to an overgrowth of bad bacteria, and is characterized by variable vulvovaginal symptoms depending on the individuals innate sensitivities. These symptoms include itching, burning, urinary frequency/urgency, redness, swelling and soreness. These are the same symptoms associated with yeast infections, so that explains why the condition can be mistaken for a common yeast infection. Also having an altered vaginal micro-flora can be more conducive for the growth of yeast in the vagina so the symptoms may be due to the presence of both entities.
Arriving at a proper diagnosis requires advanced testing. A Vaginal Fluid Analysis Test (VFA) is needed in order to identify the specific vaginal constituents, and detect the type of altered vaginal micro-flora that may be present.
VFA testing is available at Fowler Gyn International (FGI), Phoenix, AZ. Once we arrive at an accurate diagnosis, we are able to treat the underlying causes of these recurrent yeast infections using customized protocols, such as vaginal rejuvenate therapy.
