Importance of having moles evaluated by a dermatologist

Moles are common and usually harmless, so there is generally no treatment required for them.  However, if you notice any changes in the shape, color, or size, you should have it checked, because it could be the sign of something serious. Since some types of cancers start out as moles, the importance of having moles evaluated cannot be over-emphasized.

Moles can form anywhere on the skin. They vary in color, but are usually brown or reddish brown.

You should make sure to take notice of your moles, so that you can easily tell whenever anything seems different about them.  You should also keep an eye out for any new ones,as these can also be a warning sign of a health issue.  Regular checks should be done, especially if you are at risk for cancer due to your lifestyle or family history.

Why you should have your moles evaluated
You should have your mole checked by a medical professional, because skin cancer may be lurking there. Melanoma, which is a very serious type of skin cancer, often starts out as a mole. If left unchecked, it can spread to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat. Melanoma is usually caused by excess exposure to UV rays, either from the sun or from tanning beds.

Mole evaluation
A biopsy is often used to evaluate a suspicious mole. The dermatologist will remove a small portion of the mole, which is then sent to the lab where it undergoes a microscopic exam to determine if it is cancerous.
