Millions of kids in the US engage in organized sports, and this is generally good, because kids that are physically actively are more alert and motivated. They also do better in school. However sprains, fractures, and scrapes, are a part of the sports world, so parents should be aware of the most common sports injuries kids suffer, and how to treat them.

Sprains and Strains: A sprain is a stretch or tear that affects one or more ligament. The ankle and wrist are the most common sites for sprains. Strains affect the muscle or tendon. Some sprains and strains heal on their own; others require rest and elevation to allow the injury to heal properly. The doctor may also recommend a splint in severe cases.

Heat-related Injuries: Kids that play a lot are at risk for heat injuries such as heat cramps, or heatstroke. These are typically caused by extended exposure to heat and humidity, without adequate fluid intake. Kids with heat cramps should be taken indoors and given fluids to drink. Cases of extreme heat exhaustion may require intravenous (IV) fluids.

Growth plate injuries: These occur on the long bone of kids and adolescents. Growth plates are areas of developing tissue, located at the end of the long bones in kids. The long bones are found in the hands and fingers, as well as the upper and lower legs. They become solid bone when fully developed. Treatment depends on the nature of the fracture. A cast or splint is often sufficient, but more serious cases may require surgery.
