What are vulvovaginal symptoms?

Vaginal pain and irritation are among the most difficult complaints that women have. These symptoms are often an indication that the natural defense mechanism of the vagina has been compromised, and it may take advanced diagnostic tools to identify the reason for the disruption in the vaginal equilibrium. So what are some of the vulvovaginal symptoms, and how can they be treated.

Vulvovaginal symptoms
Vulvovaginal symptoms are generally concentrated in the region of the opening of the vagina. Thes areas anatomically include the labia and the vestibule. The vulvar tissues are very sensitive and delicate. Common vulvovaginal symptoms include chronic burning pain, irritation, rawness, stinging, urinary urgency and frequency, itching and dryness. These symptoms are often linked to a condition known as vulvodynia.

Women with vulvovaginal symptoms should pay special attention to vulvar skin care. Feminine hygiene products, soaps, lotions, body rinses, and detergents can affect the health of vulvar tissues, and cause irritation and itchiness. It is generally recommended that these women use hypocontactant skin care products that are very mild, and free of irritating chemicals.

Treating vulvovaginal symptoms
Treating vulvovaginal symptoms often requires a customized treatment plan that includes hypoallergenic skin care products. Fowler GYN International (FGI) has developed a hypocontactant line of skin care products called FeminaRx Pure Skin Care Collection, which is specially designed for women with sensitive genital skin.  The Collection includes hypocontactant soap, nonreactive water-based vaginal lubricant for intercourse, astringent skin rinse for the external genitalia, non-water based labial emollient, and a special blend saving cream for the genital area. If the symptoms are atttributed only to Vulvar Contact Dermatitis then signifcant improvement shuld be experienced on neutral products alone, otherwise an evaluation with a vulvar specialist is necessary to diagnose other contributing etiology.
