What Vaginal Symptoms Are Concerning?

Optimal vaginal health depends on the vagina maintaining a slightly acidic pH, as well as rich quantities of beneficial bacteria to help fend off infections.  However, there are several factors that can disturb the microflora and/or vaginal pH and cause a variety of symptoms.  But what vaginal symptoms are concerning?

What Vaginal Symptoms Are Concerning?

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge.  The normal vaginal discharge is typically clear to white in color, watery in consistency, and odorless. A change in the color, consistency, or odor of the vaginal discharge indicates an abnormal discharge.
  • Vaginal Dryness: The tissues of the vagina are usually moist and elastic, so if the vagina becomes dry and tight this usually indicates a problem.
  • Itching:  Vaginal itching is associated with bacterial and yeast infections and lesser degree with vulvodynia.
  • Pain With Intercourse:  This is also a symptom of vulvodynia or mechanical narrowing of vaginal caliber.
  • Irritation: This is another common symptom of a vaginal infection.

These symptoms usually indicate a change in the vaginal bacterial milieu.

A healthy vagina is dominated by ‘good’ bacteria or lactobacilli that coat the vaginal canal and keep the vaginal pH slightly acidic.  However, if the balance is disrupted, the ‘bad’ bacteria in the vagina may flourish.  The vaginal secretions then bathe the vaginal canal and irritate the external genital tissues, resulting in various symptoms.

Resolving concerning vaginal symptoms

Resolving concerning vaginal symptoms involves carrying out a vaginal fluid analysis (VFA) test to analyze the vaginal constituents, to determine if the vaginal microflora is in an altered state.  A customized treatment plan is  then formulated to restore balance to the vaginal ecosystem.
