What causes a yeast infection and what’s the best treatment?

Vaginal yeast infections can be annoying and uncomfortable. They are usually characterized by a vaginal discharge, itching, and burning, and are usually treated with antifungal medicines. However, there are times when these infections reoccur, which could mean that the underlying cause was not treated. That’s why knowing what causes a yeast infection, is the best way to effectively eliminate it.

Causes
At Fowler Gyn International (FGI), they have recognized the link between recurring yeast infections, and changes in the normal micro-flora of the vagina. The micro-flora of the vagina refers to the many different micro-organisms that are present there.

In the vagina, there is usually a dominance of ‘good’ bacteria, known as lactobacilli, which keeps the ‘bad’ bacteria in check. However, if the normal bacterial balance is disrupted and the lactobacilli no longer dominate, the bad bacteria take hold. This can gives rise to micro-floral conditions that more easily support the growth of yeast in the vagina.

Treatment
If yeast infections are to be properly treated, it is important to understand the etiology, and that is precisely what they do at FGI.  A vaginal fluid analysis (VFA) test is used to assist with the diagnosis. This test identifies the presence and relative concentrations of the various constituents of the vagina.

The results are then evaluated against the ‘normal’ components, in order to determine the most suitable treatment protocol. The treatment is customized to correct the underlying problem, and restore normal micro-flora balance.

FGI also recommends the use of a group skin care products known as FeminaRx Pure SkinCare Collection, for women that have sensitive external genitalia tissue. The vulvar rinse product in this collection has anti-fungal properties which helps reduce the concentration of yeast naturally found on the vulvar skin.
